Small Town Plus

Alliance was formed in 1850 by the merger of three small settlements, Williamsport, Freedom and Liberty. A fourth settlement, Mount Union, was added to the city in 1888. The name "Alliance" was chosen because of the "alliance" of the small settlements into a larger entity. It also reflected the soon to come junction of two major railroads of the time, the Ohio and Pennsylvania and the Cleveland and Wellsville.

Partly because of the railroads, Alliance quickly gained an industrial base, and the city was generally known as a railroad town. For the past 150+ years, Morgan Engineering has been manufacturing overhead cranes for companies all over the world thus establishing Alliance as "crane capital of the world." Several other large manufacturing/industrial companies located in the Alliance area now include Coastal Pet Products, PTC Alliance, MAC Trailer Manufacturing, Sun America, Trilogy Plastics, and Winkle Industries.

The Alliance area is continuing to grow and expand its existing businesses. The business sector has become very robust with many other manufacturers and suppliers, including large distribution centers for heating and plumbing, as well as metals and plastics. This diverse business community with our available, skilled workforce and low cost of doing business makes the Alliance Area a very attaractive place to do business!

Alliance is home to the University of Mount Union , plus there is a total of eight universities and colleges within a 50 mile radius of Alliance:
